Eligibility Requirements

  1. You must graduate from a recognized medical school — the Wyoming Board requires a school that is LCME-accredited (MD) or AOA-accredited (DO), or be ECFMG-certified if you are an international medical graduate.

  2. Complete a licensing examination accepted by the Board, such as: USMLE, COMLEX, NBME, NBOME, FLEX, or equivalent.

  3. Finish a minimum of 1 year of postgraduate training in an ACGME-, AOA-, or RCPSC-accredited residency.

  4. For full licensure (not just training license), you must also meet one of:

    • 2 years of accredited postgraduate training, or

    • 1 year of training + current board certification, or 5 years of continuous, full, unrestricted medical licensure in good standing.

  5. Submit primary-source verifications for: medical school education, postgraduate training, and prior medical licenses (if any).

  6. Undergo a criminal background check (including fingerprinting) as part of the application process.

  7. You must apply via both the Uniform Application (UA) and the Federation Credentials Verification Service (FCVS).

Types of License

  1. The Wyoming Board may issue:

Interstate Medical Licensure Compact (IMLC)

  1. Wyoming participates in the IMLC, making it possible to obtain an expedited license if you meet the compact criteria.
  2. To use Wyoming as your state of principal license, you must meet residency or practice-location requirements as defined by the compact.

Application Process

  1. Begin your FCVS profile and request that it be sent to the Wyoming Board.

  2. Complete the Uniform Application (UA) in full, including your Social Security Number.

  3. Review and mail the Wyoming-specific addenda / instructions that come with the UA.

  4. Pay the Wyoming Board application fee: US$ 400.

  5. Track your application status using the Board’s “Pending Application Status” tool.

  6. If eligible, you may first receive a temporary license, after which your application will be reviewed for a permanent license by the Board.

  7. In some cases (especially for first-time, non-training licenses), you may be required to interview in person with the Board at one of its scheduled meetings.

Continuing Medical Education (CME) & Renewal

  1. Physician licenses in Wyoming must be renewed annually

  2. The renewal fee is relatively low (e.g., the board’s renewal page mentions US$ 10 for some licensees).

  3. The Board offers access to a CME tracking service via the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME).

  4. There are options for inactive, emeritus, or “training” license types that carry different CME or renewal obligations.

Processing Time

  1. The Board typically meets quarterly (January, April, July, October), and applicants may need their file complete at least 15 business days before a meeting for consideration.

  2. If applying for a temporary license, you may begin practicing earlier once the basic application is accepted, subject to eligibility.

  3. There is no Wyoming-issued Controlled Substance Registration (CSR) — controlled substance registrations are handled by the Wyoming Board of Pharmacy, not the Board of Medicine.
