Eligibility Requirements

  1. Education
    • Graduate from an accredited medical school (MD or DO).
    • International medical graduates must hold valid ECFMG certification.
  2. Postgraduate Training
    • Completion of at least 1 year of ACGME- or AOA-accredited postgraduate training for U.S./Canadian graduates.
    • IMGs must complete 2 years of accredited postgraduate training unless meeting a Board exemption.
  3. Good Moral Character & Professional Conduct
    • Must demonstrate good moral character, professional competency, and compliance with Kansas statutes.
  4. Examination Requirements
    • Pass a Board-approved exam pathway: USMLE, COMLEX-USA, NBME/NBOME, LMCC, or an approved combination.
    • Must meet Kansas Board exam completion guidelines, attempt limits, and timeframes.

Application Process

  1. Apply through the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts (KSBHA) online portal.

  2. Choose the correct application type:
    • Full License by Examination
    • Full License by Endorsement
    • Resident/Training License
    • Temporary License

  3. Upload & Submit Required Documentation:
    • Medical school diploma & transcript
    • ECFMG certificate (if applicable)
    • Postgraduate training verifications
    • USMLE/COMLEX/LMCC score reports
    • Two reference evaluation forms
    • Employment/practice history
    • Malpractice and disciplinary disclosures
    • Proof of active license (for endorsement applicants)

  4. Complete Fingerprinting & Background Check:
    • Mandatory Kansas KBI and FBI national fingerprint-based background check.

  5. Credential Verification:
    FCVS is highly recommended and speeds up processing.

  6. Board Review:
    • When all documents and verifications are complete, the Board reviews and issues the license.

Special / Limited Licenses

  1. Resident Training License
    • Required for interns, residents, and fellows in Kansas training programs.
    • Must be sponsored by an accredited training institution.
  2. Temporary License
    • Allows short-term practice while awaiting full licensure.
    • Practice must be supervised and within defined limits.
  3. Locum Tenens License
    • Short-term license (up to 30 days) allowing physicians to provide temporary coverage.
  4. Telemedicine License
    • Permits remote practice limited to telehealth services for Kansas patients.
    • Requires full verification of credentials.

Continuing Education Requirements

  • Kansas requires 50 CME hours every 2 years.
    – At least 20 hours must be Category 1 CME.

Mandatory Training (if applicable):

  • Physicians prescribing controlled substances must comply with opioid and pain management education based on Kansas recommendations.
  • Kansas also encourages education in suicide prevention and human trafficking awareness.

Expiration & Renewal

  1. Physician licenses renew every 1–2 years, depending on the Board’s renewal cycle.
  2. Renewal is completed through the KSBHA online system.
  3. Proof of CME is required only if selected for a Board audit.
  4. Physicians with a Kansas DEA registration must also manage controlled substance renewal separately.

Expedited Endorsement Licensure

Physicians may qualify for licensure by endorsement if they:

  1. Hold an active, unrestricted license in another U.S. state or Canadian province.
  2. Have no disciplinary actions, malpractice concerns, or impairment issues.
  3. Have practiced for at least 2 years post-training.
  4. Hold ABMS or AOA board certification, or have valid ECFMG certification (for IMGs).
  5.  Submit two recent professional reference evaluations from supervising physicians or department chairs.
  6. Complete a Kansas KBI (Kansas Bureau of Investigation) and FBI fingerprint background check.

Processing Time

  1. Typical processing time: 4–8 weeks, depending on:
    – FCVS profile completeness
    – Background check timelines
    – Receipt of training and reference verifications
  2.  Endorsement applications may be significantly faster when FCVS is used.
  3. Delays occur due to fingerprint issues, incomplete references, or missing malpractice documentation.
