Hold an MD or DO degree from an accredited medical (LCME) or osteopathic (AOA) school.
Complete the required postgraduate training: for some pathways, 1 year of ACGME- or AOA-accredited training is needed; other routes may have different board expectations.
Pass a Board-approved licensing examination, such as USMLE, COMLEX, or the FLEX, per Missouri rules.
Demonstrate good moral character, including postgraduate reference letters from training programs.
Provide primary-source verification of education, training, and licensure.
Complete a criminal background check in accordance with board requirements.
For licensing by reciprocity, applicants must provide:
Postgraduate reference letters,
Verification of prior license(s), and
Proof of education, including at least 60 semester hours of college, per board regulation.
Register on MOPRO, Missouri’s licensing portal.
Select the correct application type:
Initial License (Examination)
Reciprocity / Endorsement License
Complete the online application or use paper forms (available via the board).
Submit supporting documentation:
Transcripts from medical school and undergrad
Postgraduate training verification
Exam score reports
License verifications from other states (if applying by reciprocity)
Pay the application fee and any required background check / fingerprinting.
Wait for document review: the Board requires six weeks minimum for review after receiving application + fee + required documents.
Once the file is complete, the Board reviews and issues the license.
Once licensed, physicians may prescribe non-controlled medications as part of their general practice.
For controlled substances, physicians must:
Register with the Missouri Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs (BNDD), and
Obtain a DEA registration.
Physicians should comply with Missouri’s controlled-substance laws and mandatory trainings (if required).
Physicians licensed by the Missouri Board of Healing Arts must complete 50 hours of CME every 2 years (for DOs, per AOA / AMA standards).
Acceptable CME categories: AMA Category 1, AOA Category 1A / 2A, or similar as approved by the Board.
Record-keeping: Maintain documentation of CME hours in case of audit.
Renewals: Physicians renew their license through MOPRO.
Inactive License: Physicians may apply for inactive status via the Board if they do not plan to practice.
Reinstatement: To return to active status, complete an Inactive Reinstatement Application.
Minimum processing time is 6 weeks from the point when the application, fee, and all required documentation are received.
Additional time may be needed if primary-source verification, fingerprinting, or document submission is delayed.
