Hold an active, unencumbered U.S. medical license or apply for Connecticut medical licensure if licensed in another state.
Graduate from an LCME-accredited (MD) or COCA-accredited (DO) medical school.
International medical graduates must provide ECFMG certification and meet Connecticut’s specific medical education requirements.
Complete at least 2 years of ACGME- or AOA-approved residency training (3 years required for international graduates).
Submit official medical school transcripts directly to the Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH).
Provide verification of residency training, sent directly from each training program.
Submit verification of all medical licenses ever held, sent directly from each state licensing board.
Provide USMLE or COMLEX exam scores directly from the testing agency.
Complete the Connecticut medical license application through the CT eLicense portal.
Pay all required application and licensing fees.

Complete a criminal background check, including fingerprints.
Provide all required documentation for malpractice claims, disciplinary history, credentialing gaps, or legal matters.
Connecticut physicians are independent practitioners and do not require a collaborating physician.
To prescribe controlled substances:
Apply for the Connecticut Controlled Substance Registration (CSPR) through the Department of Consumer Protection.
Register with the Connecticut Prescription Monitoring Program (CT PMP).
Maintain a valid DEA registration.
To maintain your Connecticut medical license:
Complete 50 hours of CME every 2 years, including:
At least 1 hour in risk management, such as:
Medical malpractice prevention
Ethics
Improving communication
Preventing medical errors
Complete 1 hour of training every 2 years in:
Safe opioid prescribing
Pain management
Risks of controlled substances
Use of the CT PMP
Typical processing time: 4–8 weeks, depending on document receipt and background check completion.
