Respond promptly if the Board requests additional documentation or clarification.
To prescribe controlled substances in Montana:
Apply for a Montana Dangerous Drug (Controlled Substance) Registration.
After receiving this state registration, apply for DEA registration.
To maintain a Montana medical license:
Physicians must complete 50 CME hours every 2 years.
CME must be Category 1 and relevant to ongoing medical practice.
Controlled substance prescribers may have additional opioid-related CE requirements depending on state rules.
Typical processing takes 6–8 weeks, depending on completion of background checks and timely submission of verifications.
