Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for an Oklahoma medical license, applicants must:

  1. Hold an MD or DO degree from an LCME- or AOA-accredited medical school, or an internationally recognized school listed in the World Directory.

  2. Complete at least 1 year of ACGME- or AOA-accredited postgraduate training (U.S. grads).

  3. International medical graduates (IMGs) must complete 2–3 years of accredited postgraduate training depending on circumstances.

  4. Pass a Board-approved exam, including:

    • USMLE

    • COMLEX

    • NBME/NBOME

    • Accepted combinations

  5. Hold an active, unencumbered medical license if applying by endorsement.

  6. Submit official medical school transcripts, diplomas, and postgraduate training verifications directly to the Oklahoma Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision.

  7. Provide verification of all licenses ever held in other states.

  8. Complete an Oklahoma OSBI background check and FBI fingerprint screening.

  9. Submit malpractice history, NPDB report, and any disciplinary documentation if applicable.

Application Process

  1. Create an online account and complete the application through the
    Oklahoma Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision (OK BOMLS) Portal.

  2. Choose the appropriate application type:

    • Initial Licensure (Examination)

    • Endorsement (if licensed elsewhere)

    • Training License

    • Telemedicine License (special category)

  3. Pay the required state application and processing fees.

  4. Submit all required documentation, including:

    • Medical school transcript and diploma

    • Postgraduate training verification

    • USMLE/COMLEX scores

    • NPDB report

    • Professional references (if requested)

    • Identification documents

    • Background check results

  5. Provide license verifications from every state or country where you have been licensed.

  6. Respond to any Board requests for additional information.

  7. Application undergoes final Board review before license issuance.

Prescriptive Authority

In Oklahoma, fully licensed physicians may prescribe medications.
To prescribe controlled substances:

  1. Apply for an Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics (OBNDD) Registration.

  2. Obtain or maintain DEA registration.

Oklahoma requires mandatory opioid prescribing training as part of controlled substance regulations.

Continuing Education

To maintain an active Oklahoma medical license, physicians must:

  1. Complete 60 hours of CME every 3 years.

  2. If prescribing controlled substances:

    • Complete 1 hour of CME in opioid and controlled substance prescribing annually.

Documentation may be audited by the Board.

Processing Time

Typical processing time for an Oklahoma medical license:

  1. 6–8 weeks for complete applications

  2. Longer if background checks, training verifications, or international documents delay processing
