Hold an active, unencumbered U.S. medical license, or apply for Delaware medical licensure if licensed in another state.
Graduate from an LCME-accredited (MD) or COCA-accredited (DO) medical school.
International medical graduates must provide ECFMG certification and meet Delaware’s medical education requirements.
Complete at least 1 year of ACGME- or AOA-accredited residency training (3 years typically required for international graduates).
Submit official medical school transcripts directly to the Delaware Board of Medical Licensure and Discipline.
Provide verification of all postgraduate training, sent directly from residency and fellowship programs.
Submit verification of all medical licenses ever held from each state or jurisdiction.
Provide USMLE or COMLEX exam scores directly from the testing agency.
Submit a Self-Query Report from the National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB).
Complete the Delaware medical license application via the Delaware Professional Regulation Online Services (DELPROS) portal.
Pay the required application and licensing fees.
Upload or submit all required documentation, including:
Medical school transcripts
Training verification
License verification
Proof of identity
NPDB Self-Query
Detailed employment history
Complete a criminal background check through both the state and the FBI.
Provide detailed explanations and documents for any malpractice claims, disciplinary actions, or employment/training gaps.
Physicians in Delaware practice independently with no collaboration requirements.
To prescribe controlled substances:
Apply for a Delaware Controlled Substance Registration (CSR).
Register for the Delaware Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP).
Obtain and maintain an active DEA registration.
All three are required before prescribing controlled substances.
To maintain your Delaware medical license:
Complete 40 hours of CME every 2 years, including:
Mandatory training in opioid prescribing, pain management, or controlled substance stewardship (as required by the Board).
Must complete extra CME focused on:
Safe prescribing
Risk mitigation
Monitoring and management of opioids and controlled substances
Typical processing time: 6–8 weeks, depending on document completeness and background check results.
Applications involving international credentials, malpractice history, or training gaps may take additional time.
